🎄🎅 News from Wave Sliding Club #4 🏄‍♂️⛄️

Mele Kalikimaka All

Looking back at a great year for Wave Sliding Club. I opened the site up for comments and emails which gave me renewed love for developing the site and products. Along with all your awesome feedback, there’s been two new stickers added to the shop, new tee modelled on Turtle’s Surf or Die shirt. And lots of orders sent out, which in turn allowed us to get to a total of £460 now donated to Surfers Against Sewage. Thank you all.

Whatever your plans for the Festive period, we hope that you have a wonderful time surrounded by the ones you hold dear and that you wake up to the gift of good waves on Christmas Day.

Give the gift of North Shore this Christmas

There’s still lots of tees left ready to give for Christmas Presents. Get your size before they run out. The Surf or Die T-shirt is on an amazing price of £16!! I’ve also lowered the cost of Express Delivery to make sure the orders get stateside before Christmas Day.

Movie Publicity Slides

So earlier this year, I purchased 56 North Shore Surf movie 35mm press photo slide transparencies on eBay – a once in a lifetime purchase! These are original publicity slides from the movie and includes some never before seen images.

They were part of a massive archive of music, movie and TV memorabilia that were from the estate of Eric Caidin. Eric died in May 2015 at the age of 62, he was a well-known American collector of film memorabilia and owner of the legendary but now closed Hollywood Book and Poster Company.

I have scanned and painstakingly digitally enhanced all the images, removing dust, scratches and even pen marks- and now sharing the new images in these blog posts. There’s lots more coming in the months ahead. It’s really interesting seeing the actors looking into the camera and behind the scenes shots of the film crew setting up the sets.

Here’s a never seen before still of Rick getting some heat from Da Hui after dropping in on Vince. What a barney!

So until next year, have a great Christmas and Happy Holidays!

👻 🕷 News from Wave Sliding Club #3 🏄‍🧟‍♀️

It’s Halloween time! 🧟‍♀️🕷🌚🏄‍♂️

On the North shore it’s a big big celebration, people love to get dressed up and decorate their houses.

Halloween also marks the beginning of the surf season in the North Shore, it’s when everyone comes in from all over the world, surfers from the mainland USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil and Costa Rica to name a few, all come to this small stretch of coastline on the North Shore, all trying to get the best waves.

“Gnarly Mask Yeah – Like it was the Last One”

To celebrate the start of Halloween there is no better image than Lance Burkhart arriving to a party in Velzyland (V-Land) decorated in his iconic pink and yellow body paint.

Has anyone ever carried this look off at a Halloween party or film screening?

Lets also not forget a very strong costume from none other than Alex Rogers. Robbie Page did an awesome job here. “Wot yank! !”

12. Really?

Guest Post from Aden Williams:

Just had to drop you a note and say how awesome the website is. The movie “North Shore” got me into surfing when I was 18 and I’ve been doing it ever since.

I bought my first board from my cousin, a used Barnfield tri-fin thruster.Probably not the best board to learn to surf on, especially on the East coast of the U.S. but it was a board. I was lucky enough to live several summers in Ocean City, Maryland and was able to surf every day…. I was hooked.  I eventually got in to longboarding and loved it.

I started out on a used 8′ 6″ Eaton which is pretty interesting because many years later I took a trip to San Diego, California and looked up Mike Eaton’s surfboard shop and went there and told him I was interested in shaping my own board.

He immediately asked me if I’d like to go into his shaping room and watch him shape one. It was pretty amazing watching him work and he gave me some great pointers.

I shaped and glassed a 9′ 1″ in my back yard shed I converted in to a shaping shack. I used a triple stringer blank and glassed on a wood single fin (pic of it below). It was pretty labor intensive but just wild to shape my own board. I used 3 layers of 6 oz. volan glass cloth on the top and bottom so it’s really old school and heavy.  It surfs really well though and it’s a pretty incredible experience to surf something you made from scratch.  I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is interested.

So just a little about some North Shore connections I’ve made in the past.

Corky Carroll, the first professional surfer, was one of the announcers at the Pipeline contest at the end of the movie.

I was at work one day looking up a place for my ultimate surf vacation and came across Corky’s website for his house in Mexico. I contacted him and set up a vacation. Turns out he picks you up from the airport, drives you to his house and you actually stay right there on the beach with him.

All food and drink provided and you just spend a week hanging with him and surfing. He lives on one of the longest point breaks I’ve ever seen. It’s a left and start breaking about a 1/4 miles out in the Pacific Ocean. I kid you not, each ride last for at least a minute (I’ve attached a not so great pic taken of me on one of the waves). Super cool to talk to him about the movie. He still stays in contact with a lot of the guys who were in the movie. Still an amazing surfer.

Beach front of legends

I took a book on the vacation titled “In Search of Captain Zero” and had it sitting on the patio table. Corky said the writer of the book, Allan Weisbecker (who also wrote “Cosmic Banditos”) was staying right down the beach if I wanted to meet him – he said just take a couple of cigars and beers down with you. We hung out for the evening, Allan kindly autographed my copy of his book and then we went surfing.

Next, I got to meet another legend and pioneer of female surfing, Linda Benson, who was staying next door to Corky. Corky gives Linda the title “The Godmother of Surfing”! Linda was the first woman to surf Waimea Bay and has been crowned world champion and US champion 5 times. It was great to meet such a living legend – not to mentioned we grabbed our boards and all went out surfing together.

Does it get any better?

Lastly, Corky introduced me to his best friend, Tim Dorsey, who also lives right down the beach from him. He’s a legend in his own right, long time lifeguard, author and big wave surfer. Lots of information on him on the internet for anyone who’s interested. A cool vacation for sure.

Vince isn’t so bad!

My brother recently had a birthday and I wanted to get him something pretty cool and I found Gerry Lopez’s (Vince from “North Shore” as everyone I’m sure who’s reading this know”) website and he had a poster available of him surfing Pipeline.  I asked him to write a personal message to my brother and autograph it, which he as happy to do.  I asked him write “Happy Birthday Haole Boy!” and he did. Pretty cool.

Chads says: Awesome Aden, incredible stories and amazing to meet these surfing legends – thanks for sharing.

NEW PRODUCTS

A new section to the blog – I can let you know what I’m working on.

Surf or Die T-shirt and Stickers

The stickers are in and look awesome, the sticker pack now contains this sticker instead of a multiples of the diamond logo. The t-shirt on the other hand is being worked on by the printers, they are struggling getting the logo to replicate the “neon” found on Turtle’s t-shirt. Good things come to those who wait.

Chandler Retro Surfboard Sticker

This classic beauty will also be part of all sticker packs. It’s at the printers right now and will be included starting next week.

So enjoy the Halloween celebrations barneys and remember to… listen to turtle!

☀️ News from Wave Sliding Club #2 🏄‍♂️

Who doesn’t like 80s surf music?

The Cars, Talking Heads, New Order, GANGgajang, China Crisis, Pseudo Echo, it was a golden era of synth fuelled surf-punk music.

We see our favourite movie open with Pseudo Echo’s Living in a Dream and you know it’s gonna to be a sick flick! Although we label this era as 80s now, you gotta remember this music was cutting edge at the time, in 1987 Funkytown was actually released the same time the movie was being filmed. Spit.

The Music Maestro

First thing to note is giving kudos to Richard Stone, thank you for putting together the movie music score. Along with Rick Brown they created an awesome compilation of music that encompasses summer surfing in the late 80s and perfectly fits in North Shore.

The year before Richard worked on North Shore he put together the music for iconic movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!

Richard sadly died way too young in 2001 aged 47. Shaka to you Richard, you nailed it brah.

The Soundtrack

Who doesn’t love those surf montages in the movie? We get to watch the radical moves along with a banging soundtrack. Epic songs like Nature of the beast, Chessboards, North Shore Roar…. they’re all bitchin man!

About 1995 I challenged myself to make a personal compilation of the soundtrack and spent many years buying CD imports from Australia and USA and writing countless letters and emails to all the below artists – these were the days before Spotify and iTunes Music Store!

I gained the details of the soundtrack while pausing the VHS tape, it was a challenge! The terrible quality meant I could barely see the artist names let alone the track details and researching the correct artist was a mission in itself. Once the DVD came out I finally completed the full list in 2006.

Listen to the movie soundtrack

The Full Track Listing

1) “Living in a Dream” by Psuedo Echo

2) “This is Australia” (Sounds of then) by Ganggajang

3) “Be My Lover” by Nia Peebles

4) “Blue Hotel” by Chris Isaak

5) “Murder Style” by Lords of the New Church

6) “Party Next Door” by Black Uluru

7) “Body and the Beat” by Dragon / Mark Hunter

8) “Shine” by Kids in the Kitchen

9) “Am I The One” by Gary Wright

10) “Feel the Spirit” by Wailing Souls

11) “Chessboards” by Killing Joke

12) “Nature of the Beast” by Angel City

13) “Listening” by Pseudo Echo

14) “Stonewall” by The Angels

15) “Happy to Give” by Journey

16) “Funky Town” by by Pseudo Echo

17) “North Shore Roar” by Paul Delph

The Soundtrack Cover

I even made new cover art for the album, I brushed out Kiani’s neck in the clouds and repositioned the yellow text on the wave to make it all fit nicely in a square format.

“Chandler, you still have a single fin mentality”

Body and the Beat playing in a segment of the movie when Burkhart refuses Chandler’s big gun board. Chandler takes the board back and replies with the great line “You came to me pal, I didn’t come to you”, Rick doesn’t get it – what a barney!. 🤙🏻

Guest Story from Phil Locke:

One rainy December evening, I went into Bournemouth town with the intention of doing some Christmas shopping but found a warm cozy friendly bar instead.

Drinks flowed and we started chatting to another family sitting next to us – the topic of music came up, partly due to the Dad had a harmonica around with neck. The son divulged he too was into music and currently recording a folk music album with other musicians in London, wow! – more drinks flowed and more chatting endured.

It turned out their whole extended family was musical and Louis’ uncle is a famous music producer and bass player in London who has worked with some legends over the past 40 years, one of which being bassist of band “Killing Joke”. Wiki Link

I thought, I know that artist… yes they made Chessboards from my all-time favourite movie North Shore!

The family were amazed when I told them about a random 1980s surf movie North Shore, the influence and following it had around the world. I told them kids everywhere grew up loving this movie, and now their kids another generation along have grown up loving this movie, quoting lines, listening to the music and how iconic and important this track – that their uncle produced! – was in the movie.

I still keep in touch with Louis and when we show the movie again at the local cinema I’ll invite him and his uncle down to view the screening.

“Hey Alex, come jump in with us – great, I love skin diving”.

While “This is Australia” (Sounds of then) by Ganggajang was playing at Burkhart’s house, the video on the TV was actually “Fifteen Minutes by Andy Warhol”

North Shore Roar

Researching the title track North Shore Roar was an especially poignant journey. I found that the artist Paul Delph died of aids in 1996. I wrote to the family in Cincinnati and Paul’s Mum told me he was very proud to be part of the movie soundtrack, writing the title track to the movie! Paul kept a cast-signed framed poster of the movie in one of his rooms in his house. After telling Paul’s mum about the soundtrack project she also kindly released this demo track to me in 2002 – it’s from a tape recording Pauls friend Andy kept. Andy digitized and sent it to me on email.

This particular track that’s part of the soundtrack on the site differs from others found on YouTube. It’s the original recording Paul created and doesn’t have any overlaid wave and wipeout sound effects that you would find if you just extracted the audio from the movie. If you enjoy the track as much as I do, please donate in Pauls memory to the (RED) charity.

Awesome music, rad soundtrack. Enjoy it dudes.

☀️ News from Wave Sliding Club 🏄‍♂️

Hey haoles… howzie?

This is my first blog post from the website Wave Sliding Club! Awesome to have you reading this, I’d also bet that if you’re reading this… you too are a fan of the greatest film of all time – North Shore.

In a series of posts I’m going to let you know how the idea for the website came about, the people I’ve met and spoken to along the way, research undertaken, updates on products and ideas that made it or not onto the online shop – and share some of the amazing comments and feedback I get from around the world!

Finding North Shore

I grew up on the south coast of the UK. Living just a few miles from the beach, my bro and I spent our entire school years living and breathing surfing. Every day of school we rang up for the surf report, every day of summer was at the beach and every weekend was at the local surf shop – Bournemouth Surfing Centre (shout out to the boyz).

In my opinion living and breathing surfing is a perfect foundation for life, it teaches you about the power of nature, keeps you fit and gives kids something to focus their energy on rather than getting into trouble.

“Knarly movie yah, like it was the last one…”

I watched this movie endlessly in the 90s after buying the only copy from the local video store when it closed down. An absolute bargain at £2. North Shore was always in the VHS playing in the background and we would all constantly quote Turtle’s lines. Yeah.. No!

Last month the movie celebrated being 32 years since release and I’ve just turned 40. I studied art and design for 5 years, then forged a living in the design industry before setting up my own design company and surfing business. I’ve also been lucky enough to have travelled the world a few times living and breathing surfing – taking the values… and one-liners of North Shore with me.

Cosmic Brah

The idea for a website started in 2005 when I met Clay H on a message board. We were both searching for the soundtrack from the movie. We exchanged details and helped each other complete the album. We called it a ‘cosmic happening’ back then, these were the days before Facebook, iTunes or iPhones. Clay made the original Chandler Diamond logo and posted me a tshirt he made, this was the foundation of the shirt you can now find on the shop. We still keep in touch to this day – what a dude. 🤙🏻

Released 14 August 1987

The film is a 80s cult classic about friendship and surfing – as well as earning and offering respect, learning from each other and a reminder not to take life too seriously – not everyone makes it pro.

William Phelps and his team did a fantastic job, the surfing cinematography is truly amazing for the era, the pro surfers of the 80s grant the movie kudos. Yeah the love storyline is cheesy, but the one-liners Turtle has given us opened up a whole new surf language, this is exactly what makes the movie all the better and everyone who watches it takes a one-liner or two with them to the beach.
